Mexico: Quintana Roo to ship habanero peppers to the UK

December 2, 2016

The first shipment of habanero peppers from Quintana Roo will be sent to England, where they will start marketing this product, on the 15th of this month.

Emilio Alamilla Mis, President of Habanero Pepper Product System in the state, said that this shipment opened up the European market, ensuring quality products for everyone.

He stated that, currently, 29 of the 47 social greenhouses in the state had a constant, good quality production of habanero peppers.

"The quality we obtain allowed us to send the first shipment to England and thereby to start selling in the European market. The national market is very saturated, which decreases the price of peppers," he said.

He said that the habanero producer group (Chunhuas), which he represents, had three greenhouses working at 100% capacity and that each greenhouse was producing 30 tons of peppers every 18 months, which is how long a planting cycle lasts.

The producer said that, since the domestic market was saturated with the product from open field producers, producers from Quintana Roo had opted to regain the international market, which the state had previously entered with Maya hydroponics.

José Francisco Texocotitla Beltran, director of agribusiness of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sedaru), said that the government sector was trying to rent a place in San Antonio Texas, to sell the various products produced in Quintana Roo, such as habanero peppers, honey, pineapple, dragon fruit, and papaya, among others, to avoid having intermediaries, so that producers could achieve higher profits through direct sales.

Last year, farmers from Yucatan state also exported few loads to the UK.
